I call ripoff of http://www.videosift.com/story.php?id=2755

and thus Bobby Yang himself.

So... because another guy has played rock music on a violin, anyone that plays not-violin-or-fiddle music on a violin or fiddle is automatically is officially a ripoff?

This guy is better than Shimbakuro. There, I said it. It's true. 400 more votes to come.

The style in which he is playing is uncannily similar to Yang's style: he does not use amplifiers, pickups, or anything else electronic (aside from standard microphones) to alter his sound. However, the "Heavy Metal" sound is not nearly as refined. Thus I wonder to myself whether or not he came up the idea to play in such a way himself, or if he had... "influences."

It just personally upsets me to see copycats (whether or not this actually is one) and the whole "jump on the bandwagon"-type behavior long after someone has already done the same thing.

I watched that Yang vid, and its not a similar style at all, DePue uses the bow to create a drumlike rythm and manages to play melody on top of the background parts. It's truly amazing what he does. Yang just plays a guitar solo on the violin. And its not like a "jumping on a bandwagon" thing, he probably didn't see the yang vid and go "I sholud do that!" this kind of thing takes years of practice and incredible skill.

"I call ripoff"?

This kind of talent should be appreciated despite the possibility of it baring a resemblance to something someone else has done. I suppose we should make fun of Shakespeare because the Greeks wrote tragedies millennia before the Bard? There's nothing new under the sun, just enjoy the various variations.

Oatmeal

Yes, in that one video, he "Just plays a guitar solo." He does a lot more than that. I recommend going to Bobby Yang's webpage or MySpace to get a better idea of what he is fully capable of. Which, as I said earlier, is a lot the same as what this gentleman does here (i.e. plays violin covers of contemporary rock). Regardless of any difference in what you hear, their aim is the same: to recreate the sound of an electric guitar on an acoustic violin.

Whether or not it is a 'ripoff' is at this point immaterial - my initial comment and word choice was intended to point to something that was posted over 300 days earlier and received little to no recognition, and then this hits the top 15 despite being - as I see it - "uncannily similar." Sure, he's welcome to play what he likes how he likes, but the irony just irks me.

That is all.

I dunno GreenBean, I visited bobby yangs site and heard some more of his music, and you're right, he does try to recapture the sound of an electric guitar on the violin. He does however have a whole band backing him up on alot of his tracks and only playes the lead part (very well mind you). What Depue does though, is play the whole song by himself. The owner of a lonley heart part is brilliant. He captures the melody and the rythm perfectly, and I don't think he is going for an electric guitar sound, but more of a unique take on the origional song. You can only really compare the two in the sense that they both play rock music, and its on the violin, and neither of these guys were the first to do that.

It wouldn't be a ripoff debate if he just went on a roof an fiddled... Oh, wait...

Everybody has influences. We stand on the shoulders of those who came before us. I don't see the debate - every kid who picks up any instrument tries to rock out with it. Yes, even the flute, the tuba, and the cello. (Couldn't find Apocalypse for that last one)

I don't see the debate neither, and I think oohahh's got it spot on. HaricotVert's irritated that another excellent artist with the same styles didn't get as much attention and everyone else's irritated this one's being called a "ripoff".

Anyways, a very enjoyable post.
